IRS Template




IRS REPORT (Suggested sections)

1. Cover Page: Research Title and members’ names, index no. & class.

2. Part A


Research Justification Report: This section includes your introduction (what is the problem you observe) and research aims (what your research intends to FIND OUT), reasons for choice of topic, feasibility, manageability and literature scan (summaries of scholarly articles – other than summarizing you must show how it relates to your research)

3. Part B

Investigation Report: This section includes your method (is it an experiment? survey research? interview research? why is your method suitable or why is it the best way to find out), sample (who? how many? why?), the survey/ interview questions (yes, you need to include them here – don’t assume the marker knows your questions!!)

4. Part C

Discussions of Findings: results of your survey, discussion of what the data tells you and finally your recommendations (your proposed solution to the situation or problem you first identified)

5.  Conclusion – what are some of the learning points that you can highlight and suggest some ways to do a further research of your topic / area

6.  Bibliography – List all your references (do a google search on APA format to learn how to cite your resources)

Submit hard copy draft by Friday, 6pm to my pigeon hole no 54 if you’d like my input.

Final copy on Tuesday, 24 Sept during IRS class.  We will also do reflection on
that day during lesson.

Grading will be done on Thursday, 26 Sept 2.00 pm.

General feedback on your group write-up

n  You need to be more specific about your research title, aims and subjects
n   Your research aim is what you seek to FIND OUT, not what you seek to improve or change... You find out the factors/ causes/ effects; then, you propose solutions to the problem based on your FINDINGS
n  Incoherent arguments in your justification... You yourselves must first understand the arguments that you're putting forward and be able to explain it in simple terms, off hand when asked.
n  START READING .... you're not reading enough about the topic on which you are researching


Example

Team B:
The title could be "An investigation of the effects of student-teacher relationships on SST students' participation in class"

This research aims to find out the effects of student-teacher relationships on SST students' participation in class.

The main research question is how do student-teacher relationships affect SST students' participation in class?


Team C:
The title could be "An investigation of the effects of technological gadgets on SST students' physical well-being"

This research aims to find out the effects of prolonged use of technological gadgets on SST students' physical well-being.

The main research question is how is the prolonged use of technological gadgets affecting SST students' physical well-being?


Team F:
The title could be "An investigation of SST students' attitude towards water conservation in school."

This research aims to find out the attitude of SST students towards water conservation in school.

The main research questions are what is the attitude of SST students towards water conservation in school and how is their attitude impacting water consumption in school?

PS: The other teams which need to narrow / scope their research area / titles / research questions, feel free to email me for consultation BEFORE you proceed to do your proposal video.  I've also included some feasible topics below** for your adoption / adaptation.

Subjects -  remember to specify e.g. 10 identified pairs of siblings in SST from Sec 1 to 4.

Research relevancy and feasibility - I think you're capable of handling this part.  Just remember your job is to convince the readers of what you're doing.

Data Collection Method - ensure that you have good idea of what data to collect and how to collect them.  If unsure, search for scholarly or academic articles related to your research project and learn how others did it.

Food Wastage sample:
Eating is a favourite past time for many Singaporeans.  However, it is also observed that it is not uncommon for people to waste food. According to a report by Rachel Lim (2011)++, 675 million kg of food was wasted in 2011.  The amount is enough to fill up 12 000 double-decker buses! At SST, it is observed that at least 3 out 5 students waste food during recess. 1 in 3 of them wastes half of the food he/ she bought. Food wastage is a concern because not only it impacts on waste management and the environment, it also reflects on our attitudes and behaviour.  Hence, a survey can be done to find out why students waste food, how they feel about food wastage and what can be done to reduce food wastage.  The findings can point to ways to change students’ behaviour or at least to persuade them to think about the issue at hand.
